It is with profound respect and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Jorge Colon Lara Tagle, known affectionately as Papi Lara, who left us on March 22, 2026. Born on January 18, 1924, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Jorge’s life was a remarkable journey marked by resilience, dedication, and a steadfast commitment to family.
Jorge was the beloved son of Jorge Simon Lara Leon and Delia Maria Tagle Arriaga. Raised in Ecuador alongside his six siblings, he distinguished himself early in life as a determined and hardworking individual. As the eldest of seven children, Jorge often assumed responsibility beyond his years, forging a path that would inspire all who knew him. His early years saw him navigating the demanding roles of captain aboard merchant marine vessels and working on ranches as a landscaper – experiences that shaped his indomitable spirit.
On May 20, 1950, Jorge united in marriage with Zena Maria Caceres Calderon, beginning a partnership that would last until her passing. Their union blessed them with twelve cherished children: Fanny, Adalberto, Aracely, Walter, Colon, Arturo, Kleber, Elizabeth, Dante, Carlos, Geovanny, and Leopoldo. Jorge's unwavering devotion to his family was evident in every aspect of his life, notably when he immigrated to the United States on March 23, 1972, seeking better opportunities for those he loved. Slowly but surely, he brought his children to join him, ensuring a legacy of hope and perseverance.
A man of Christian Evangelical faith, Jorge found solace and strength in his spiritual beliefs. His life was enriched by simple yet profound pleasures: tending to his garden, taking long walks through his neighborhood, crafting homemade cheese, and immersing himself in the reading of his Bible. Known for his robust energy and strength even at the venerable age of 102, Jorge was remembered as a superhero figure within his family — a loving brother, devoted spouse, nurturing father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Jorge’s military service and honors include his role as Captain, a testament to his leadership and commitment. Despite hardships, he maintained a joyful demeanor and a disciplined approach to life that has left an enduring impression on all who crossed his path.
He is survived by his two brothers, Victor and Edio Lara; his eleven children mentioned above; twenty-three grandchildren; and an extensive lineage of thirty-six great-grandchildren. While we cherish Jorge’s enduring presence among us through these living legacies, we also remember with solemn reverence those who have gone before him: his beloved spouse Zena Maria Lara, two sisters, two brothers, one child, and one grandchild.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to caregiver and daughter Fanny Lara and the dedicated team at Thank You Nurses, Ltd., whose compassionate care supported Jorge in his final years.
Jorge Colon Lara Tagle’s remarkable life journey, from humble beginnings in Ecuador to the nurturing patriarch of a large, loving American family, stands as a beacon of endurance and love. His memory will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege to know him. May he rest in eternal peace, reunited with his beloved spouse, siblings, and those dear departed.
