Richard Turner Poindexter

Richard Turner Poindexter, known lovingly to many as Rick, Mr. Rick, or Ricky, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2026, at the age of 73. Born on January 10, 1953, in Austin, Texas, Richard was the beloved son of Noble Turner Poindexter Jr. and Evelyn Patricia Connor. He spent his formative years in Irving, Texas, where he attended Bishop Dunne High School. Richard went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from North Texas State University, an accomplishment he was proud to share with his family.

Richard’s life was marked by decades of meaningful work and quiet dedication. He served as a football coach and physical education teacher at St. Thomas, inspiring young athletes with his passion for the game and his commitment to the well-being and growth of his students. He also spent time working as a mail clerk with Deluxe check printers, performing every task with diligence and sincerity.

Richard was a devout Catholic, attending Mass regularly and integrating his faith into every aspect of his life. His deep spirituality was a foundation that sustained him through life’s challenges and joys alike. Richard’s interests were rooted in the simple pleasures: cheering on local college sporting events—especially SMU games—watching high school and college football, listening to the music of The Moody Blues and Fleetwood Mac, and spending time with his beloved dogs. These were passions he loved sharing with his family and friends.

Family was at the heart of Richard’s world. He is survived by his devoted children, Kevin Poindexter and his wife Tara, and Linda Poindexter. He cherished his granddaughter, Alice Poindexter, who always brought a twinkle to his eye. Richard’s loving sisters, Peggy Mentzel and Susan Oliver (along with her husband Mike), also survive him, as do his nieces Tina, Lori, Andrea, and Shannon. He enjoyed lasting friendships with Griselda, Andrea, Jesus, and Jackie, and these close bonds brought him much joy and comfort throughout his years.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Noble Turner Poindexter Jr. and Evelyn Patricia Connor, as well as by dear friends Reggie Hudson, Rose Hudson, and Ken Castleman.

He was known for his easy humor and for reminding those around him of the importance of keeping life straightforward; one of his favorite sayings was “K.I.S.S.” — “Keep It Simple, Stupid.” This philosophy guided his approach to both everyday matters and larger life decisions. Richard valued authenticity, kindness, and the humble pleasures of living.

His passing leaves a deep sense of loss in all who knew him, but his memory endures in the laughter, lessons, and love he shared so freely. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Avir at North Richland Hills and the compassionate team at Freedom Hospice, whose support made a difference in Richard’s final days.
