Rose was born on May 31, 1937, in Kaufman County Texas to parents Theresa and John Manak who were sharecroppers and immigrants from Czechoslovakia. She grew up working the farm with her family until they moved to Ennis Texas where she attended St. John’s Catholic High School. Rose’s father John died when she was only 17 yrs old and this event largely shaped the rest of her life. After graduating high school, she married William H. Mitchell Jr. who had joined the US Navy. This would take them to numerous US States to live and explore.Rose attended various Catholic churches throughout her life, and her faith was very important to her. Rose often volunteered for her children’s school functions but eventually decided to attend secretarial school while stationed in Great Lakes, Illinois. Rose was an avid reader and loved adventure stories like those written by John Grisham and shared the love of reading with her son William, not to mention being a Big Brother fan. Rose loved to travel and travel she did. She was an adventurer at heart, and her adventures took her to places like Hawaii, Switzerland, the Holy Land and so much more. She wanted to see it all, and she did her best to make that happen. Rose also loved to dance and raised us attending Saturday evening Czech dances, teaching us how to polka, waltz and cotton-eyed joe. Others often commented that she had legs like a June Taylor dancer, as she loved to recall. She loved taking walks in the park and feeding ducks but one of her greatest joys was spending time with her young grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Rose later worked for the Irving Police in their Records Department. She enjoyed her co-workers and felt like she made a difference there. When she retired after 20 years of service the department threw one heck of a retirement party for her, sharing that she would be sorely missed.
