John Funderburk Jr., 23, who was affectionately known as "John John" to his friends and family, passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2018. He was born in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 15, 1994. John John was the second youngest of a combined family of five children. His favorite title in the family was Uncle John to his nephew and niece, Sean and Mia West, with whom he was crazy in love with. John John loved sports; he played football, baseball and lacrosse growing up. He would assist his dad who was a football coach and one year they teamed up to umpire. John John was very blessed to have been able to have very loving grandparents, Bill and Renee Funderburk, who spoiled him with lots of love and affection, his Abuelita was over all the time cooking him his favorite french toast and empanadas. He had lots and lots of uncles, aunts, and cousins who love him so much!!! They were all very present in his upbringing making sure they attended his birthday parties, his games, and holidays. John John was part of a big church family at Grace Pointe Church; they loved him and had watched him grow up since he was 16. In 2015, John enlisted in the United States Army where he chose a mechanical career path, which was no shock, since 99% of the men in his family are engineers. Everyone was proud of him and our family loved to brag about him. John John was very intelligent and figured how to disassemble and assemble things at a very young age. He was tender hearted and compassionate person and was very giving to the less fortunate. There was a special place in his heart for the elderly and disabled. John John always made people laugh and had a natural ability of turning things around to make it sound funny. In May 2017, John John was diagnosed with a very aggressive and rare type of kidney cancer, to this day there is still no real treatment plan that exist for this type of cancer. We already miss him so much and we ask that you keep his memory alive by talking and sharing your stories about John John. His family would be honored to have you present at his service where they will celebrate his life. John John is survived by his parents, John and Helen Funderburk; brothers, Billy, Jr, and Robbie; sister, Victoria and husband, Kolton, whom he loved like a brother; among numerous other family and friends. Visitation will be from 10:00 am - 12:00 noon at Grace Pointe Church in Irving, on Wednesday, February 14th. Funeral Services will start at 12:00 noon at the church. Interment will immediately follow the service at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery, Dallas, Texas.

In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made to Grace Pointe Church In Memory of John John.

Sending all my love and prayers to you all right now Cousin. I'm so saddened for your loss. Having been through a child with cancer, I can only imagine the pain. I know your faith in our creator is strong and he will carry you through. He is now in the loving arms of our Father. xoxo

John & Family: While reading the obituary of your son, I could not help but think of my own Grandson who seems to so resemble your son in demeanor and interests.  It certainly is with a heavy heart that I send my sympathies and blessings to you and your family.  As part of your Piedmont/Able family, I am so sorry for the loss of your son! Peace be with you.

I know that it has been so long since we talked and now it is too late but hearing all the amazing things you have accomplished makes me smile. I remember when we were kids and always going to Mamaw and Poppy’s house . I miss those times just being kidsand not having a care in the world. You are my hero and you make me want to be a better person.

SPC Funderburk though we only met for brief period of time; I truly believe God had a purpose for us to meet.I had the honor to not only take you to your last appointment in Fort Sam Houston San Antonio but also esteemed to serve as the escorting Non Commisioned Officer from Fort Hood to Irving. I will never forget your intelligence and genuine caring spirit about people. I feel privileged and cherished the stories of how much you loved your family and truly admired how you kept a resilient spirit to never give up on life. Rest in peace my friend and brother .
